Charles Philipps, Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Charles Philipps trained as a chartered accountant and then moved into investment banking. He was instrumental in the formation of Amlin plc of which he was Chief Executive from 1999 until 2018. He served on the Council of Lloyd’s and was President of the Insurance Institute of London. He is also the senior independent director of Great Portland Estates plc. He became a Trustee in December 2010.
HRH Princess Beatrice
In March 2019 HRH Princess Beatrice joined our board of Trustees. Her Royal Highness is also Patron of a number of organisations and focuses the majority of her charitable work around children’s welfare and education, bringing a wealth of experience in these areas to Outward Bound.

Ian Ashman
Ian Ashman has substantial experience of the delivery of high-quality education and of meeting employers’ skills needs, having been a Principal and senior manager in two successful London colleges for over 20 years and a past President of the Association of Colleges. Now retired from full time employment, he works as an executive coach and skills adviser. Ian was appointed a Trustee of The Trust in 2013.
Andrew Cartwright
Andrew is a retired banker, and was Chairman of CCHF All About Kids from 2011. After graduating in History from Cambridge in 1969, he worked in London, Singapore, Amsterdam and the United States advising large companies on financial strategy. He is now a trustee of several charities mainly focused on disadvantaged children. Following CCHF's deed of gift to The Trust he was appointed a Trustee in 2018.
Nicholas Gair MBE
Nick is the author of the textbook Outdoor Education: Theory and Practice and has published many papers and articles in the educational press. He was previously Chief Executive of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, and a Visiting Professor to the School of Sport and Education at Leeds Beckett University. Nick is a Chartered Geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the College of Teachers. Appointed a Trustee in 2013, Nick is also Chairman of The Trust's Risk Management Committee.
Leo Houlding
Leo is the modern face of British Adventure and one of the world's top climbers. He’s a veteran of a score of epic ascents, including Everest. Leo pushes the limits of exploratory adventure by taking the ultimate in extreme sports to the most extreme environments. Leo has become an ambassador for the younger generation of climbers and has been called one of Britain's top ten adventurers by The Telegraph. He became a Trustee in 2017.
Philippa Kramer
Philippa is HR Director at Johnson Matthey and has worked in HR for over 20 years. She first became a supporter of The Trust when working as the Northern European Regional HR Director for AkzoNobel and established a close partnership with the charity, to deliver leadership programmes and initiatives for their employees. Appointed a Trustee in December 2013.
Jonathan Lewis
Jonathan started his career as a Chartered Accountant with PWC before transferring to the Financial Services sector in 1995. After working in various roles in London, New York and Tokyo he became Chief Executive Officer of Nomura International plc in 2014, where he is responsible for the business in Europe, Middle East and Africa. He is also Governor of Walthamstow Hall School. He has been a Trustee since 2017.
Fasha Mahjoor
Founder and CEO of Phenomenex, global leader in the research, development, manufacturing and distribution of analytical scientific solutions, and Neoteryx, provider of microsampling services and devices for the collection and analysis of biological fluids. Voted as one of the top 100 most influential people in the analytical science industry, Fasha oversees these global organizations, both with unique and vibrant cultures, and each dedicated to the advancement of the sciences and defined by an enormous passion and investment in supporting worthy philanthropic causes. Became a Trustee in 2015.
Dame Louise Makin
Louise joined BTG as Chief Executive Officer in October 2004 and has led the transformation of BTG from an IP commercialisation business into an international specialist healthcare company. Louise has an MBA, and holds an MA in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge. She's also a non-executive director of Intertek Group plc and Woodford Patient Capital Trust and is an Honorary Fellow of St John’s College Cambridge. Appointed a Trustee of The Trust in 2011.
Colin Maund
Colin was a graduate from the London School of Economics. Chairman of Achilles Group, he set up the company in the UK in 1993 and was responsible for its international growth into 26 countries. He's founded several businesses in his career and is currently CEO of Hellios Information. In 2009 he was awarded UK Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for IT Services. Colin has supported The Trust for many years, initally as a Patron Company Member and corporate client, utilising Outward Bound training programmes to develop his new employees, and since 2012 as a Trustee.
Terence Mordaunt
Terence started his career as a deck apprentice in the Merchant Navy before becoming Distribution Manager of Alcan UK in the late 1970s. He then became Commercial Director of Bellway PLC, the house builder before leaving to start his own company, First Corporate Consultants in 1986. He purchased Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks, Bristol in 1991, with his business partner David Ord. Terence is a qualified Master Mariner and a Chartered Shipbroker. He is Chairman of The Bristol Port Company and Pendennis Shipyard Limited. Appointed a Trustee in 2015.
Paul Voller
Paul works with clients on a wide variety of corporate, commercial, constitutional and charity regulatory issues. He has traditionally practised in the fields of private companies, charities and commercial banking, however in recent years his work has become more focused on corporate and commercial work in the charity and not for profit sectors. A former Trustee of CCHF, Paul joined The Trust's Trustees in 2018 when CCHF made a deed of gift to The Trust and ceased to exist in its current form.
Christine Walker
As a teenager, Christine attended several Outward Bound courses, which had such a profound effect on her, that after completing her degree and postgraduate Certificate in Education, she went on to become an Outward Bound instructor. She worked at The Trust for four years, before moving on to work with young people with disabilities. In 2000, Christine joined The Robertson Trust as Head of Social Impact where she worked until September 2019. Christine was appointed a Trustee in 2015 and is Chair of the Outward Bound Council in Scotland.
Guy Williams
Guy was appointed Managing Director Northern Europe for global business AkzoNobel in 2011. In 2013, he was given responsibility for the Global Sales Excellence function to enable AkzoNobel to strategically develop and drive a clear sales and category management strategy. Prior to joining AkzoNobel Guy held a number of roles across major retailers. Appointed a Trustee in 2014.
The Board of The Outward Bound Trust has today accepted the resignation as Patron of HRH The Duke of York following his announcement yesterday that he will be withdrawing from public duties for the foreseeable future.
