Tim, age 16, often found he clashed with his mum over being given freedom and independence. He felt like she was too over protective and didn’t allow him to be the adult he felt he was.

“In some sense I choose the course as a bit of a retreat from my family for a bit, just to get out the house. In my mums eyes I’m still her son -I’m still a kid, but I feel like an adult and that creates conflict. Sometimes as a teenager I forget my mum’s view, I sometimes feel like she’s a bit over protective of me but in reality, I’m probably too risky.”

Going on the Skills for Life Award and developing his awareness of others made him more able see things from her side and better able to explain to her how he was feeling.

Because of the course, and because of my instructor’s helpful coaching I’ve been able to explain it to my mum, I told her how people at Outward Bound made a point of treating me like an adult.

I quite like being independent - we had a discussion about how we could work that out.
