Stewart Oxley - Eskdale, The Lake District, 1990

I attended the Eskdale centre in the summer of 1990 as part of a training program offered by my employer, Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC). I can distinctly recall travelling by train from Essex up to Ravenglass in the Lake District and then swapping the conventional train for a narrow gauge railway to a station near the Outward bound Centre.

There were many highlights during that week. Setting off early one morning to climb Scarfell Pike, building bivvys and sleeping in the dunes by a beach, having to do a trust exercise where you canoes as a group into the middle of the lake and the climbed out and walked around on top of the gaggle of canoes that all the group were holding together! Of course legendary morning run around the lake and the leap off the pier that I had heard so much about!

I wish I could recall the name of our instructor but the week itself lives long in the memory.
