Mike Twaddle - Tywyn, Wales, 1959

I attended the Army Outward Bound School at Morfa Camp, Towyn, Wales in 1959 as some army personnel were recommended to try it. I consider it the top physical achievement of my life. The course consisted of participants from schools and the Army and Marines. It was a six weeks course of climbing mountains, rock climbing sea cliffs and assault courses; it was tough. We also got map reading and orienteering and current political affairs studies. There were a few kayaking lessons too.

We were supposed to be training so as to form a winter warfare brigade for action in Norway in case of attack there by Russia. I was there six weeks and was fighting fit when I left after climbing several Welsh mountains including Snowdon. It gave you confidence. I still wear my badge and occasionally I bump into ex Outward Bound types.
