John Blant - Ullswater, The Lake District, 1963

Visit Ullswater from 4 March until 30 March 1963.

I can see from my Outward Bound Personal Log Book, collected by the school bus, from Penrith train station, at 7:30pm. Monday to Saturday got up by Mr Smeaton or Mr Johnson at about 6:15am, run around the yard, before a cold shower and then breakfast.

Oats Patrol photo (surname spellings may be incorrect!!) Back row - A. Hanson, D. Payne, me (John Blant), R. McLees, D. Phalps & W. Stirman. Front row - A. Bray, T. Walton, G. Hurell, C. Smith, J. Roche, & J. Foreshaw.

I can recall the rope course, climbing down the rope ladder from our bedroom, circuit training, cross country runs, expidition including camping up Helvellyn in the snow, rock climbing on Gowbarrow, 4 days trip with walks including Scafell Pike with an over night stops a K Hut in Borrowdale. Stopping at Elterwater Youth Hostel from were we climbed the Langdale Pikes and Sergeant Man.

Evening meal was always at 6:00pm and lights out by 9:30pm.

It was a wonderful month and some 51 year later, still doing those same walks/climbs, but they are getting much harded and slower!!!
