In an expansion of our research into the longitudinal impact of an Outward Bound course from Summer 2023 (Outward Bound Reflections), we are proud to release the next instalment of research of reflections across generations of Outward Bound alumni.

Since 1941, guided by Kurt Hahn’s pedagogy, Outward Bound has delivered transformational experiential learning that provides lifelong personal and collective impact. This summer, through an online survey, we invited alumni to comment on how their courses have shaped their skills, attitudes, and behaviours. Results were segmented into three age bands (recent, career and legacy alumni), to highlight how Outward Bound impacted their sense of self, approach to challenge, and relationships with others.

The research shone a light on how Outward Bound played a significant role in these areas for those interviewed, helping individuals to build confidence and compassion for others, develop skills that support positive pathways in life, such as resilience and emotional control, and shape personal values and support wellbeing.

A huge thank you to all alumni who participated. If you would like to know more about the research, please contact [email protected]
