On Friday 9 June 2023, 25 alumni representing decades of Outward Bound experiences came together in the Lake District to join staff and Alan Hinkes OBE to scale Hallin Fell.

Alan, the first British Mountaineer to conquer all 14 mountains over 8,000m, completed his Mountain Leadership training at Ullswater in 1976. After coffee and pastries (and more pastries!) were consumed, the group set sail from Another Place Hotel and rowed across Ullswater to our Howtown Centre. After a site tour, we climbed Hallin Fell, sharing stories and memories along the way, to enjoy the amazing and awe-inspiring views.

After a quick descent, we took powerboats from Howtown back to our Ullswater Centre, where the group looked around the buildings, archives, stores and learning village.

The group were then treated to a book reading and speech from Alan, before heading off for the weekend, ice creams in hand, with a new chapter of their connection to Outward Bound having been written.

A big thank you to everyone who came and participated. Here’s to the next one!
