A legacy of resilience

In 1975, Sir Chris Bonington led one of the most daring climbs in mountaineering history: the Everest, the hard way expedition.

It wasn’t just about reaching the summit. It was about courage, teamwork and determination in the face of the unknown. Now, 50 years on, we’re celebrating that same spirit in a new way.

The Fund created in Sir Chris's name removes financial barriers, allowing more young people to experience the transformative power of the outdoors, especially when life feels uncertain.

Too many young people are struggling

Rising anxiety. Disconnection. Low confidence.

Many young people are feeling stuck. That’s why Outward Bound exists: to help them get unstuck.

We take them out of the everyday and into the wild. They meet new people, face real challenges and start to believe in what they’re capable of.

Give to the Fund now and change twice as many lives

This Christmas, you can help more young people build the confidence and resilience they need to thrive. By helping Outward Bound reach £500,000, we can continue to facilitate life-changing adventures.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, every donation to the Sir Chris Bonington Fund will be matched up to the total value of £200,000 (or until 31 January 2026, whichever is soonest).
On 1 December 2025, the fund totalled an amazing £92,500.

Whatever you choose to give, your donation will help a young person rise to a challenge, connect with others and discover what they’re capable of.

Your support in action

Leo, aged 15, came to Outward Bound through our Summer Adventures. Here’s what he had to say:

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is resilience – and just the ability to keep going, even when things get tough. That mindset of not limiting myself, and believing there’s always another chance, is something I’ll carry with me into the future.

Your donation helps remove financial barriers for young people like Leo. Over 85% of participants require funding to attend. The Sir Chris Bonington Fund exists to make that possible.

Every donation helps remove barriers for young people like Leo – so they can step away from pressure, into nature and return stronger.

Every donation makes a difference

Your gift today will help remove the barriers that hold young people back, opening the door to growth, connection and confidence.

Thank you for standing alongside young people and honouring the legacy of a true adventurer. With your support, they can take bold steps towards a stronger future.
