Sixty and Fabulous, Ullswater development taking shape
This week we're celebrating 60 years since first opening our doors at our Ullswater centre. The celebrations don't end there however, despite some unseasonal weather conditions, we're pleased to report our Ullswater redevelopment project is in full swing and on schedule!
Visitors to the site will be able to spot our new super-eco timber-framed review rooms, our new boat maintenance shed (which is taking shape nicely) and work being carried out to prepare for the imminent arrival of our efficient biomass boiler. The exciting changes are all part of a £3 million revamp, which also includes a new accommodation block, workshop, stores and improvements to the main house.
The entire project is estimated to take around 70 weeks to complete and despite the recent heavy rain, Bex Duffill, project manager comments, "We’re on schedule, with thanks to the local construction team who have done an incredible job so far. The biomass building is taking shape, the boat house has just had its new floor laid and all the ground work is now complete for the new stores."
Changes to the main house have also begun, with the removal of the old Windermere block ready for the new extension. Once the major building work is complete attention will then go to the surrounding grounds, which will become an eco-area with many new trees being planted, invasive species removed and local wildlife encouraged.
As the centre is currently running at maximum capacity, the new development will help make the facilities at Ullswater more efficient. Ergonomically designed, the upgrades will make a greater impact to the young people visiting.
The centre will remain fully operational throughout the development, with minimum impact to participants and visitors alike.
We'll keep you posted on our progress.
