Life Changing Scholarships available for UK Teens
To celebrate our 75th anniversary, The Outward Bound Trust has made Scholarships available to any young person that would like to take part in The Outward Bound Skills for Life Award in summer 2016 and 2017.
THE SKILLS FOR LIFE AWARD
The Skills for Life Award is an immensely powerful 19 day outdoor residential experience for individuals, which sees 15-19 year olds travel from across the world to take part.
I think that the skills for life course provided by Outward Bounds is one of the most fun, challenging and beneficial to teenagers available. I will strongly recommend it to any one I know and encourage other teenagers to give it a go. Participant
Combining personal development techniques with high adventure, it is a potentially life shaping opportunity designed to ensure that students are equipped to make an effective transition through education and on to university, college or employment.
The Award supports them to achieve their goal whilst giving them the independence and ability to flourish in their new environment.
The 19 day adventure is an exciting and challenging experience which sees participants embark on incredible journeys across land and water. From climbing to sea-kayaking to gorge scrambling – they’ll even take part in multi-day expeditions, camping deep in the mountains.
See some pictures and stories from this summer on our Facebook page.
Using the mountains, rivers and lakes of the Highlands, Lake District and Snowdonia, our aim is that participants challenge themselves, demonstrate progress through 1:1 reviewing and action planning, work outside of their normal friendship group and leave with a breadth of experience that will enrich a personal statement and set them aside from their peers.
We understand that standing out in an increasingly competitive environment is a big challenge for young people. Being able to grasp an opportunity and flourish in a new environment is another. And even if they manage to do that, do they have all the skills and qualities demanded by employers once they have left school?
Skills for Life Award participants gain:
- Life-long employability skills: such as self-management, resilience and communication
- A fresh perspective: a unique opportunity to meet young people from a range of backgrounds and from all over the world
- A powerful story to tell: There are only 450 places available in 2016. As well as leaving with endorsement from instructors, personal action plans and a video statement, they’ll have the confidence to tell their story and showcase their newly developed skills and experiences
- A life changing adventure: an unforgettable summer experience in the outdoors to reveal their true potential.
89% of Outward Bound participants say their course has helped them when applying for further education and work.
We work with a large number of employers in the UK who send thousands of graduates and apprentices to Outward Bound each year to develop the attitude, aptitude and behaviours that are so critical in the modern workplace. The Skills for Life Award gives individuals the chance to develop and demonstrate those behaviours in the most unique of environments. Learn more about our corporate clients here.
Even in University applications, they are looking for so much more than the subjects required for the course and these courses you provide allow kids to show another side to their personalities. Their personal statements seem to play a big part in decision making. Parent
Parents reported an improvement in four distinct areas:
- Desire for challenge
- Ability to think clearly about the future
