I left my heart in Ogwen Cottage

The Trust’s Marketing Manager Laura Ridley shares her recent experience at our newest centre.

Heart In Ogwen 1I always jump at the chance to get out of the office and visit any one of our centres, experiencing the buzz of centre life and watching the young people we work with flourish in front of my eyes always leaves me feeling inspired and extremely motivated.

After hearing the positive feedback from our customers’ week on week about our latest centre Ogwen Cottage and its differences from our other centres, I couldn’t wait to visit and find out more.

Ogwen is our smallest centre at just 36 beds verses 184 at our largest centre Aberdovey, but size really doesn’t matter when it can offer groups access to Snowdonia on the doorstep.

The appeal to all who have been to Ogwen Cottage is that unlike our other centres, they are able to have exclusive use of the centres facilities for the length of their stay. As I walked through the front door I felt instantly at home and got a sense of the ‘family feel’ that has been described by many.

The property itself is steeped in history and famous in the mountaineering circles, now owned by the National Trust our partnership with them offers a unique experience to participants with access to National Trust rangers who are able to work with groups and educate them on the local environment.

The proximity of the wild environment to the centre is the closest I’ve ever experienced, less than a minutes’ walk and I was well on my way to an exciting adventure. Nick Dawson our Learning & Adventure Manager for the day, pointed out the endless opportunities for groups in the surrounding area - with the terrain offering a wide range of challenges for a first-time adventurer through to the most experienced.

Heart In Ogwen 2Nick went on to explain that the advantage of the environments being so close, has meant that a longer day of activities has been possible resulting in groups returning to centre for a wholesome meal and mug of hot chocolate and then straight to bed to rest their minds and bodies for more of the same the following day. An approach which has been extremely popular with the visiting staff!

People certainly shouldn’t be put off by its size, 3 groups of 12 participants works well especially as at least one group out of the three is out on expedition each night.  With its rustic charm, amazing location, community feel and endless opportunities for young people – Ogwen Cottage has quite simply stolen my heart.

I really could spend all day talking about Ogwen but I reckon the pictures I’ve taken speak for themselves.
