Babcock (Marine) Clyde

In my view, technical competence is no longer enough for an engineering apprentice. The Growth Mindset programme is definitely delivering more rounded individuals who can contribute effectively to the business. Stuart Aitkenhead, Safety & Compliance Director

Business need

A strategic review at Babcock (Marine) Clyde had highlighted two key focus areas of growing the pipeline and building capability and capacity.

The L&D team chose to reinvest in their apprenticeship programme as they recognised that their apprentices needed more than technical skills to deliver against the business need. They needed the ability to embrace change, face complexity and meet challenges within an ever changing landscape.

Result

80% of apprentices now complete their training early compared to 20% pre-programme. This has brought immediate and enduring cost savings for Babcock (Marine) Clyde.

Solution

There has been a paradigm shift in their attitude following the Growth Mindset programme. They’re grasping what is expected of them, they want to do it and they want to prove to their stakeholders that they can do it. SVQ apprentice assessor

To make a real impact on the apprentices, their teams and ultimately the business, Babcock (Marine) Clyde worked with The Trust to design a unique programme with key modular inputs, technical qualifications and continual business support. The Growth Mindset programme combines:

  • Residential modules, exploring effective mindsets, strengths and development
  • Innovative projects and action learning, to put learning into practice
  • Feedback, review and dialogue to embed lasting behaviour change
  • Workplace support, 1:1 coaching, monthly progress meetings and reports, placement questionnaires and behavioural assessments.

AWARD WINNING

Babcock (Marine) Clyde’s Growth Mindset programme won the 2016 Princess Royal Training Award, bronze at the 2017 Learning Awards and were finalists at the CIPD People Management, Personnel Today and Scottish Training Federation awards.

“Setting out on the growth mindset journey meant engaging with a partner who understood behavioural and culture change and was equipped to deliver an experience which would act as a major catalyst in enabling that change. The Outward Bound Trust using Outward Bound® experiences coupled with highly skilled change practitioners, not only grasped what it was that we wanted to achieve but worked with us to recommend, adapt and enhance the programme to deliver fully rounded apprentices with the behaviours required for an ever changing business and a client with high expectations. The Trust’s experience and skill, guiding us through set-up to reinforcement, delivers a programme every year, lasting across a 3-year period, which is proving itself sustainably results wise and financially.”
