20% off-the-job training requirement
Behavioural development is now a formal requirement of apprenticeship standards along with knowledge and skills. Apprenticeships must also include 20% off-the-job training.
Apprenticeship provider PROCAT (Prospects College of Advanced Technology) chose Outward Bound as their delivery partner for behavioural training because:
- Outward Bound's approach not only complemented the technical knowledge and skills training they were teaching but
enhanced the apprentices’ learning at college and in their respective workplaces.
- Outward Bound programmes are fundable through the levy and count towards the compulsory 20% off-the-job training.
PROCAT brought 70 students from employers including Transport for London, Telent, Bombardier and Keolis Amey to Outward Bound Eskdale for a behavioural development programme that accelerated workplace behaviours, from education to employment.

delivering apprenticeship standard behaviours
Outward Bound mapped the behaviours set out in their apprenticeship standard in order to design the content of the programme. During the week the apprentices undertook a number of challenges that increased in complexity to develop skills in line with these apprenticeship standard approved behaviours:
- Act professionally
- Display a self-disciplined, self-motivated, proactive approach to work
- Work reliably and safely
- Work effectively, efficiently and collaboratively, individually and as part of a team
- Receptive to feedback
- Prepared to make a personal commitment
- Be risk aware
- Proactively identify and manage risk
- Demonstrate leadership, motivating and leading by example.
During their time at Outward Bound each apprentice completed a learning journal and action plan to create a working document, identifying strengths, weaknesses and actions to work on throughout their programme and in preparation for end point assessment.
