Remembering Moray Sea School
The Moray Sea School at Burghead was launched in 1949 as the Scottish counterpart of Outward Bound's Sea School at Aberdovey. Moray Sea School closed in 1976 when The Outward Bound Trust moved to Loch Eil on the west coast of Scotland. Sadly there has been no recognition that Outward Bound existed in Moray – until now…
Ed McCann was an Outward Bound instructor at the Moray Sea School from 1967-1970. Over the past seven months Ed has spearheaded a project to establish an Outward Bound memorial plaque and two information boards on the site of the former school. Our hope is that these plaques will commemorate the school and enable people to understand it's history and importance – not only to all of the students and staff who spent time there, but also to the local economy in terms of employment and local services.
Ed's hard work means that we have permission to place the boards and plaque at the original school site in the village and at the former seamanship department by the harbour – but we now need to raise £3,000 to produce and install these commemorative items.
We are therefore asking for donations towards the cost of the plaques.
How to donate
As much or as little as you can give to help support this project to ensure that the memory of Outward Bound lives on in Moray would be hugely appreciated. If just 30 people can donate £100, then we will hit our target by the end of the summer.
If you would like to support this project, please quote 'Moray Sea School' in any donation correspondence. Donations can be made online or you can send a cheque to our Scottish headquarters - The Outward Bound Trust, Robertson House, 152 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4TB.
Any additional funds raised will firstly be kept towards the upkeep of the plaques, and the remainder will go towards our bursary fund. Our bursary support provides financial assistance for young people from across the UK to experience their own Outward Bound adventure. Last year 25,000 young people came to Outward Bound and 73% needed financial support to enable them to attend.
