Reminiscing together - 24 hrs at Outward Bound

IMG 6733Over the course of 24 hours, 24 Eskdale and Aberdovey alumni retraced footsteps to where their life-affirming, perhaps life-altering, Outward Bound courses had taken place. The journey to the West Lakes and the Welsh coast was filled with quick-to-be-dispersed trepidation and turned to nostalgia; a new sense of belonging and community with others who share a common experience.

The events were developed to enable small groups of alumni and their guests to re-live and remember their time at Outward Bound; juxtaposed with learning about the impact of The Trust today and our plans for tomorrow.

Guests met with instructors and Head of Centres and looked through archive materials and their own records. There was the opportunity to tour the Centre, see historic and new equipment and observe current groups on activity and attend their end of course presentations. As well as eating and reminiscing together, guests stayed on-site or at local hotels, but to show how Outward Bound remains adventurous, guests walked around, canoed over and (a brave few) jumped in the tarn at Eskdale! In Aberdovey, alumni took to the waters, both on a powerboat and canoes. Alumni were invited to stay in touch and to consider supporting future generations of alumni through a Gift in their Wills.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive:

A well thought out, well planned opportunity to re-visit a place that had a huge influence on me when I attended as a callow 17 year old, 55 years ago. Food excellent, accommodation excellent, very friendly current staff… a very good way to encourage alumni who may have done well in life financially to support OB. Mr C (Eskdale, 1962)

A rewarding and reflective time of both my time as a student and an instructor. The staff were welcoming and helpful at all times. What stood out was the changes in resources and courses now on offer. The improvements have been so vast it is difficult to find any fault. The professional approach to instructor training is excellent. Legacy giving is a promotion which I feel sure will enhance funding. Mr L (Aberdovey, 1966)

Fulfilling, fun and enjoyable… thought provoking. Administration first class. Team excellent bunch, so helpful and friendly. Mr G (Eskdale, 1959)

An enjoyable 24 hours – great support from all staff, great food (!), thanks for the memorable experiences. Ms O (Aberdovey, 1957)
