Our Impact
The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity dedicated to unlocking the potential in young people through learning and adventure in the wild. We change the lives of thousands of disadvantaged young people every year. In 2011, 24,907 young people took part in an Outward Bound course and 69% of them received financial support as a result of the generosity of our dedicated supporters.
Many of the participants we work with suffer from low self-esteem, poor educational achievement and an inability to trust others. Through challenge and adventure in the outdoors, they have positive experiences, perhaps for the first time in their lives. They gain confidence, begin to trust others, take responsibility for their actions and understand what they are truly capable of achieving in life. 93% of teachers agree that Outward Bound influences their pupils’ personal development, in particular their confidence and self-esteem and 93% of pupils now have better relationships with others as a result of the social skills they developed.
We take pride in our exceptional instructors who have the compassion, skills and qualifications needed to support and challenge participants on their journey. Combining outdoor skill and educational capability, our instructors inspire them to achieve more than they ever thought possible. 87% of students said that their Outward Bound experience had taught them to keep trying when things don’t work out.
We work with young people to ensure that a variety of different learning outcomes are met during their Outward Bound experience: 60% of teachers observe an improvement on their pupils’ return to the classroom.
