Facilitating Primary to Secondary Transition - The Arthur Terry School, the Midlands
Main aim: To ease the transition from primary to secondary school and to integrate Building Learning Power (BLP) within the course so that the transfer of learning is smooth.
Skills used: Collaboration, planning, revising, reasoning, perseverance, managing distractions, absorption and listening.
Results: “The course is a real demonstration of where enrichment truly bridges the whole curriculum. What a missed opportunity for those who did not go.” Jayne Oliver, Teacher.
Maximising Employability Skills - Walsall Academy, the Midlands
Main aim: They bring many groups to The Trust, one of which is their sixth form to take part in an apprentice style course. It focuses on future choices and employability skills.
Skills used: Organisational, presentational, time management, making careful judgments and exploring the features of effective teams and leadership styles.
Results: The pupils use their new skills and experiences to support university and job applications.
Embedding Learning for Life Skills - Shenley Academy, the Midlands
Main aim: This course is directly linked to Shenley’s Learning for Like Skills.
Skills used: All the skills used are with the aim of developing creative, reflective, independent and team focused learners with effective communication skills.
Results: The instructors and visiting staff then help the students to identify the relevant skill that was used, record them in log books and link the activity to winning VIVO points (a national reward system).
Improving University Applications - Lomond School, Scotland
Main aim: Having worked with The Trust for over 15 years, Lomond School bring their senior pupils each June following their exams.
Skills used: They use high adventure to develop: self confidence, consideration of others, determination, communication and decision-making.
Results: After the course, the school receives a report from the group’s instructor demonstrating how each pupil has changed in each of the key areas as a result of their programme with The Trust. The pupils then use these experiences and new skills to include in their university applications and to reflect upon in future interviews.
Bringing the Environment and Geography to life - Leighswood Primary School, the Midlands
Main aim: To combine what they learn in geography lessons at school with their course at The Trust’s Aberdovey centre.
Skills used: Their whole geography module is linked to the course so specific areas they wanted to look at were: the water cycle, estuaries and rivers, coastal geography (including rock pooling!) and map reading/orienteering.
Results: On returning to the classroom, they create display boards covering some of the topics learnt at Aberdovey about the environment. They also use their Outward Bound experience as inspiration for creative writing, which includes short stories ranging from ghostly mysteries to pirates and comedies.
