Our partnership with the John Muir Award

john-muir-award-logoThe John Muir Award was launched in 1997 to offer people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to engage with wild places, conservation and biodiversity. It is a nationally recognised environmental award scheme that encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.

Around 20,000 participants get involved in the John Muir Award every year, through provider organisations such as The Outward Bound Trust.

The mission of The Outward Bound Trust is to unlock the potential in young people through discovery and adventure in the wild. One of The Trust's key strategies is "to inspire concern for, and raise awareness about, the natural environment", and it is this that provides the rationale for a deepening partnership with the John Muir Award.

We have worked with the John Muir Award for seven years, delivering Awards across our five young people centres in Snowdonia, the Lake District, and Scotland.

"I've long been a supporter of both organisations, and am delighted to see them working closely together and playing to each others' strengths. This approach between The Outward Bound Trust and the John Muir Trust recognizes that learning through frontier adventure, and enjoyment, awareness and care for the natural environment, can and should be part and parcel of the same experience. Perhaps more than ever before, we need to better understand our relationships with wild places and natural processes. In aspiring to support thousands of youngsters on this journey, this initiative has my wholehearted backing." Sir Chris Bonington, Deputy Patron of The Outward Bound Trust
