Outward Bound Powers Up Apprentices

The Outward Bound Trust is helping to power up apprentices, as part of three week-long programmes that got underway this week (January 25).

Almost 200 apprentices from across the UK will pass through the centre in three weeks, as Rolls-Royce completes its ninth annual apprenticeship programme with The Outward Bound Trust.

The latest programme coincides with National Apprenticeship Week, which takes place from February 1-5.

John McCarthy, Client Relationship Manager at The Outward Bound Trust, said: "The Outward Bound Trust has been working with Rolls-Royce since 2002, delivering a tailored apprenticeship programme that delivers real, tangible results.  Learning in the outdoors can really complement technical, 'on the job' training, with the skills learnt at Outward Bound quickly being transferred back into the workplace, to great effect.

"As well as promoting a strong team ethic, we help the apprentices build confidence and self-awareness.  Rolls-Royce's commitment to using The Outward Bound Trust as a key part of their apprenticeship scheme really does demonstrate the belief they have in the delivery capability of Outward Bound and the benefits to their business."

The 190 apprentices are taking part in a five-day residential training and development course as part of their 2nd year Rolls-Royce apprentice programme.  The apprentices use outdoor-based activities to help develop key skills required back in the workplace and to reinforce behaviours that are integral to Rolls-Royce’s core values, such as customer focus, integrity and high performing teams.

Neil Fowkes, Learning and Development Manager at Rolls-Royce, said: "Rolls-Royce invests heavily in its people, and apprenticeships form a key part of our recruitment strategy.

"The Outward Bound Trust’s development programmes help to really motivate and develop our apprentices.  Teamwork, customer focus and integrity is absolutely vital in our industry, and the programmes at Outward Bound help to encourage this."

The Outward Bound Trust delivers apprenticeship programmes for companies including Rolls-Royce plc, Volkswagen Group Ltd, Unilever and BAE Systems.  Established in 1941, the Trust has five centres across the UK and has delivered outdoors-based experiential learning courses to over one million people.
