The Outward Bound Trust is an outdoor learning charity that equips young people with social and emotional skills through learning and adventure in the wild. We work with youth groups across the UK, providing experiential wilderness programmes in Snowdonia, The Lakes and The Highlands.
As a charity we can offer bursaries to almost 70% of our participants, so that as many young people as possible can benefit from a high quality residential experience.
Through our ongoing evaluation and research efforts we are able to demonstrate that our courses have real impact on young people’s attitudes, skills and behaviours.
We aim to change how young people think and feel about themselves and their lives by building their personal, social and emotional skills so they become more effective individuals, whether in education, life or work.

A Partnership Approach
The Outward Bound Trust works in partnership with youth groups to deliver outdoor residential experiences, which are tailored to meet groups’ individual needs and values.
Throughout each course we focus on how soft skills and experiences can be transferred back into the home, school, work and community environments. This means we are very good at delivering to specific requirements or issues, from changing behaviours and raising aspirations through to developing effective leaders.
This course achieved all of our objectives and more. The group experience started from the bus journey and each session was excellent. The course instructor took into account the needs of each individual, making sure they were all challenged equally. I have seen a direct impact on the young people, not only in their confidence but in the new friendships that have formed as a result Paula Murray, Young Careers Development Workers, Glasgow North East and East End Young Carers.
Our instructors are expert educators, with over half possessing academic qualifications for delivering learning, in addition to their outdoor qualifications. They have the skills, maturity and experience to both support and challenge young people, whether in the review rooms or up a mountain.
Whilst the immediate goal is for participants to become confident in their own abilities and more effective in their learning, we believe the skills developed during our courses enable them to continue to thrive throughout their lives.
You can choose from a range of themed courses, from Engaging in Learning to Teamwork Skills and Leadership Skills, as well as bespoke. Each course has a clear set of outcomes.
Please get in touch to discuss your group's requirements, so we can advise you on the appropriate course.
