Secondary Schools & Colleges

I have seen a definite change in confidence, self-belief and behaviour. For some it has been the highlight of their year and they are already working towards being able to attend next year. It has opened up a new world to them. Director of PE, Sports and Community, Secondary School

The Outward Bound Trust is an outdoor learning charity that equips young people with social and emotional skills through learning and adventure in the wild. We work with secondary schools and colleges across the UK, providing experiential wilderness programmes in Snowdonia, The Lakes and The Highlands.

As a charity we can offer bursaries to almost 70% of our participants, so that as many young people as possible can benefit from a high quality residential experience.

Course Outcomes

Through our ongoing evaluation and research efforts we are able to demonstrate that our courses have real impact on young people’s attitudes, skills and behaviours.

We aim to change how young people think and feel about themselves and their lives by building their personal, social and emotional skills so they become more effective individuals, whether in education, life or work.

Specific and measurable course outcomes include

  • Increased confidence and improved personal and emotional wellbeing
  • Improved relationships with others
  • Increased resilience
  • Increased confidence in learning
  • Increased knowledge and understanding of the natural environment.

A Partnership Approach

The Outward Bound Trust works in partnership with secondary schools and colleges to deliver 3 and 5 day outdoor residential experiences, which are tailored to meet their individual needs and values. Throughout each course we focus on how soft skills and experiences can be transferred back into the home, school or work environment. This means we are very good at delivering to specific requirements or issues, from supporting effective transition and raising aspirations through to developing effective leaders.

The Experience

The activities enrich and improve upon our main programme and stretch and challenge the students. Outward Bound provide facilities, exercises and environments that we are unable to provide. Steve Hunter, Public Services Lecturer, Walford and N. Shropshire College

Our instructors are expert educators, with over half possessing academic qualifications for delivering learning, in addition to their outdoor qualifications. They have the skills, maturity and experience to both support and challenge young people, whether in the review rooms or up a mountain. In addition to undertaking exciting and challenging activities, we believe in immersing young people as deeply as possible in the natural environment. The majority of our participants experience an expedition, where they camp out overnight and spend at least 24 hours away from modern-day amenities and distractions. Whilst the immediate goal is for participants to become more effective in their learning, we believe the skills developed during our courses enable them to continue to thrive throughout their lives.

You can choose from a range of themed courses, from Adventure & Challenge and Transition through to Team and Leadership as well as bespoke. Each course has a clear set of outcomes.
