Experiential learning

The learning cycle

What is Experiential Learning?

A number of our clients refer to experiential learning as a learner centred approach based on the view that people learn best from experience.  We hear other clients say, more simply, that experiential learning is learning-by-doing.

The basis of Outward Bound Professional’s approach to experiential learning can be traced back to Confucius around 450 BC: "Tell me and I will forget, show me, and I may remember, involve me and I will understand."  Rather than presenting information purely as a training-expert, our skilled facilitators create situations that enable participants to discover their own answers to challenging business issues.

Our approach to experiential learning uses participant’s own experience and their subsequent reflection about that experience, combined with team and leadership theory, as the means of generating understanding.  Consequently, new skills, knowledge and insight are transferred back into the workplace.
